Of all the Fiji experiences, the cultural night is the one most consistently recommended by visitors who've done it — and most regretted by those who didn't. Fiji's beaches exist in many places. The kava ceremony, the meke dancing, the fire walking, and the lovo feast are distinctly, irreplaceably Fijian.

Running in the evening, it fits perfectly after any daytime activity. Most visitors book it for their second or third evening — after a day on the islands, an evening of culture and feasting feels like the perfect counterpoint.

The Kava Ceremony

Kava (yaqona) is the foundation of Fijian social culture. Every significant gathering begins with it. You sit cross-legged in the traditional meeting house (bure), the kava is prepared in the tanoa bowl, and you drink from a bilo (coconut shell cup). The appropriate response: a clap, "bula," and drinking in one go. Your guide explains the cultural significance of every element.

Fire Dancing & Meke

Fiji's fire dancing is genuinely spectacular — performers manipulate flaming torches with extraordinary precision, spinning and throwing in complete synchronisation. The meke that follows is traditional Fijian storytelling through dance and song, with movements passed down through generations.

The Lovo Feast

Lovo is Fiji's earth-oven cooking method. Meats, fish, and root vegetables wrapped in banana leaves and cooked slowly underground over hot coals. Deeply flavoured, tender, and extraordinary. It is a proper meal — fish, chicken, taro, cassava, breadfruit — all cooked this way.

• Dress modestly for the village section — covered shoulders and knees
• Ask your guide before taking photos during the kava ceremony
• Go hungry — the lovo feast is substantial and excellent
