One of the Pacific's Most Extraordinary Experiences
The Sawa-i-Lau Caves in the Yasawa Islands are a natural limestone cave system where an underground chamber fills with natural light filtered through an underwater passage β creating the famous glowing blue effect that has made these caves legendary among Fiji travellers. Swimming through the underwater passage into the cave is one of the most unusual and beautiful things you can do anywhere in the Pacific.
Getting There
The Yasawa Islands are the outer island chain, requiring a full-day catamaran trip from Port Denarau. The journey is part of the experience β the Yasawa archipelago is dramatically beautiful, with volcanic peaks and pristine uninhabited beaches. Multiple snorkelling stops are made en route.
Tips
- Comfortable swimming is necessary to access the main cave chamber β you swim through an underwater passage approximately 3 metres long
