The Shark Reef Marine Reserve at Beqa Lagoon is consistently ranked among the top five shark dive experiences in the world. Established in 2004 through a conservation partnership between local villages and dive operators, it has been running for over 20 years with an exceptional safety record. The reserve protects an area where sharks have been habituated to divers — creating predictable, close-up encounters with multiple species in clear, warm Pacific water.

Bull sharks (regularly 2.5–3 metres), tiger sharks, sicklefin lemon sharks, tawny nurse sharks, whitetip reef sharks, blacktip reef sharks, silvertip sharks, and grey reef sharks. Multiple species present simultaneously. Extraordinary by global standards.

Conservation Success Story

The reserve was created when local villages decided to protect the sharks rather than catch them — generating more income from dive tourism than from fishing. Shark populations have increased significantly since the reserve's establishment. Visiting this dive directly supports the community and conservation program.
