Fiji's Capital and Cultural Heart
Suva is Fiji's capital city — a vibrant, chaotic, genuinely interesting place that most visitors staying on the Coral Coast or in Nadi never visit. That is a mistake. Suva has a different energy from the tourist west: more urban, more diverse, and home to the best museum in the Pacific islands.
The Fiji Museum is the anchor of any Suva visit. It holds an extraordinary collection of pre-contact Fijian artefacts, colonial history, and Pacific cultural material. The Bligh Water exhibit — relating to Captain Bligh's open-boat voyage through Fiji after the Mutiny on the Bounty — is particularly good. Allow 90 minutes minimum.

Other Suva Highlights
The Suva Municipal Market is one of the best local food markets in the Pacific — kava roots, tropical produce, street food, and a genuine cross-section of Fijian multicultural life. The harbour walk along Victoria Parade is pleasant. Thurston Gardens provides a shaded respite in the city centre.
